Detecting giant electrocaloric effect in SrxBa1-xNb2O6 single crystals

PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 thin film is the best electrocaloric effect material which has cooling Delta T per unit field (MV m(-1)) about 0.254 under electric field shift Delta E 30 kV cm(-1) at Curie temperature T-c = 222 degrees C [A. S. Mischenko, Q. Zhang, J. F. Scott, R. W. Whatmore, N. D. Mathur, Science 311, 1270 (2006)]. Here, it is shown that an EC effect due to applied electric field shift parallel to the c-axis in SrxBa1-xNb2O6 single crystals thin film has a value of cooling per unit field larger than PbZr0.95Ti0.05O3 thin film. Furthermore, SrxBa1-xNb2O6 single crystals have Curie temperature T-c closer to room temperature. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4718350]
