Librium

In the 1960's, the compound chlordiazepoxide or Librium, was found to be a strong central nervous system depressant and was used to treat insomnia, muscle spasms and the symptoms of alcoholism. Other similar anxiolytic drugs such as Valium and Xanax followed on from Librium and each proved as successful as the last. However, extended use of these drugs resulted in increased tolerance anda strong physical dependence and they also became popular in the recreationaldrug scene. As a result they are not as commonly prescribed today and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants such as Prozac, have taken their place.
