This article discusses the memory of May Fourth in Hong Kong where the motifs of national salvation and cultural renaissance were appropriated, internalized, and transformed to serve local purposes. Comparing the different memories over decades, the author argues that the local appropriation of May Fourth motifs did not undermine the national discourse. On the contrary, it enriched and deepened the national discourse to make it directly relevant to local interest.
