Modern communities - civil society

The article defines the notion of civil society by introducing and analyzing the concept of community. It analyses the nature of the connection between the two concepts as well. Main statement of the article is that the most adequate concept which defines the essence of the modern community is civil society. In order to support this argument, the author introduces the three most used interpretations of the concept of community (local/neighbourhood, interest/elective community and communion) and states that the fundamental connection between the two concepts is that community is the cultural environment, space of civil society. Through analyses the community functions, the author points out that activities of the people may appear in a given cultural context (community) and parallel it may integrate into local and supranational level as well (civil society). The article states that civil society is a strong concept and it's reasonable to strengthen this dimension of the community work because 'development by the community' approach based on self-help, helping each other, and development of abilities to be proactive and act. Only activities, practices in the civil society can materialize it.
