Numerical investigations of the flow in a pump turbine in pump mode

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is currently being used more and more routinely for the design of hydraulic turbomachinery. For the designer of a pump-turbine the pressure rise and the various flow phenomena that occur in pump mode at different operating points are of special interest. The goal of this work was to examine to what extent numerical simulations can be used to predict these aspects. The flow was experimentally measured with pressure tappings and laser optical methods and these test data were used for the comparison with the Navier-Stokes code.
