This study investigates the control of a transient thermoelastic displacement distribution in a piezoelectric composite disk consisting of a transversely isotropic structural layer onto which piezoelectric layers with concentrically arranged electrodes are perfectly bonded. When the bottom surface of the composite disk is exposed to a transient ambient temperature, the axial displacement on the bottom surface is controlled to have a desired distribution by applying appropriate voltages to the electrodes. The applied voltages are determined subject to stress constraints by employing the method of Lagrange multipliers. To find the optimum solution quickly, a new technique for improving the optimization process is proposed. Finally, obtained numerical results are presented in graphical form.
