Prevalence and predictors of sleepiness in epilepsy patients

Daytime sleepiness and its predictors were investigated in 244 epilepsy patients on chronic, stable AEDs treatment, by means of Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and multiple choice sleep questionnaire. Excessive daytime sleepiness was documented in 11 % of the cases. Among the variables considered as possibly to influence Epworth sleepiness score, presence of seizures in the last year, years of education and loud-habitual snoring with or without other sleep-apnea symptoms resulted to significantly influence ESS score at analysis of variance. The data stress that factors other than AEDs treatment can underly sleepiness in epilepsy patients. Seizure activity and possible sleep-apnea should be not disregarded in a comprehensive evaluation of the complaint of sleepiness in these patients.
