摘要
Direct imaging will be one of the next major steps in the investigation of extrasolar planets. Currently, adaptive optics imagers are generally not able to deliver the high dynamic range that is necessary to detect a planet next to its parent star, which may be 15 and more magnitudes brighter. The main source of noise limiting the observable dynamic range, by orders of magnitude, comes from halo speckles. Differential imaging is capable of suppressing this source of noise greatly. Therefore, we suggest to build a differential imager for the VLT to image extrasolar planets directly.
