Complications of the hysteroscopic surgery. An analysis of 13-years' experience

Objective: To estimate the incidence of complications of operative hysteroscopic procedures, as soon as the more frequently found in our revision. Materials and methods: Through a retrospective descriptive study we analysed the operative hysteroscopic procedures carried in the University Hospital's Puerto Real (Cadiz) between January 1992 and December 2004 (833 hysteroscopies). We determined the incidence of complications, specific hysteroscopic procedure when found with more frequency and therapy of these complications. A complication was defined as an unexpected event during hysteroscopy that required further treatment (eg, stopping procedure because of excessive fluid overload, longer postoperative observation, or further laparoscopy or laparotomy). Results: Surgery complications occurred in 21 (2.52%) of 833 hysteroscopies. The perforation uterine was the most frequent complication (0.72%). The endometrial resection and the hysteroscopic polypectomy were associated with higher odds of complications (0.96% and 0.96%, respectively). Conclusion: Complications during hysteroscopic surgery are rare. Awareness of possible complications and precautions to prevent then is important. The surgery hysteroscopic as safe procedure and low odds of complications.
