In the article we argue that the Medicina mentis (1687) by E. W. von Tschirnhaus (1651-1708) participates in the departure from Scholastic Metaphysics (Schulmetaphysik) exemplified both by the Logica vetus et nova (1654) by Johannes Clauberg (1622-1665) in a slightly softer way and by the Einleitung zur Vernunft-Lehre (1691) by Christian Thomasius (1655-1728) more radically. In order to defend this thesis, the article consists of three parts. In the first, we offer a brief sketch of the process by which Schulmetaphysik becomes relevant in seventeenth-century German universities. Afterwards, the mentioned works by Clauberg and Thomasius are analyzed so as to discover to what extent both thinkers are critical with the scholastic tradition. Finally, the essay is ended by reflecting on the existing links between the work of Tschirnhaus and the works by Clauberg and Thomasius.
