Cables for cable-stayed bridges: which material for tomorrow?

摘要：
The safety of suspension and cable-stayed bridges being determined by that of their suspension components, various types of cables and arrangements are described. The main possible causes of damage, e,g. corrosion and fretting, are analyzed. The operating conditions in cable-stayed bridges are discussed and short indications are given on the different kinds of materials which can be used. It appears that steel remains quite competitive.
