Chronic constipation is a symptom that can be attributable to a variety of diseases. Few carefully selected patients may he suitable for surgical intervention. Meticulous studies are mandatory to select these individuals. Fecal incontinence is a disabling and distressing condition; many patients are reluctant to even discuss the condition with the physician. Physiologic studies can differentiate between surgical and nonsurgical. cases. Many therapeutic options exist contingent upon the result of these studies.
