Efficacy of preoperative color Doppler ultrasonography for planning flaps

Preoperative evaluation of pedicle vessels is important for planning flap operation. We describe the efficacy of preoperative use of color Doppler ultrasonography for planning free or pedicled flaps in patients with various complications. We performed flap reconstruction for 12 patients with various complications: anatomic variation, history of prior surgery, injury or infection. The location, diameter and blood flow of pedicle vessels were investigated preoperatively by color Doppler ultrasonography. We performed 6 free flaps and 6 pedicled flaps. Preoperative sonogram was consistent with the intraoperative findings, and it enabled us to dissect flaps safer. Preoperative color Doppler ultrasonography is useful for planning a flap operation in complicated cases.
