Direct force measurements between zirconia surfaces: Influence of the concentration of polyacrylic acid, pH, and molecular weight

摘要：
The adsorption of three different molecular weights polyacrylic acid (PAA, MW 1800, 50000, 90000) on zirconia has been studied as function of pH, and the concentration of polymer. Atomic force microscopy was used to directly monitor the changes in interaction force. Regardless of the concentration, the interaction force is always attractive with a low molecular weight (1800) polymer when the pH is below the pKa of PAA. When the polymer molecular weight is as high as 50000, and the concentration is 300 ppm, the total interaction force is repulsion. For PAA of MW 90000, the interaction force is always repulsive, regardless of the concentration and pH.
