摘要：
Greetings provide the means for opening conversations appropriately and for establishing and maintaining social relationships. As linguistic routines that form part of the repertoire of politeness, they embody the character of nature that has come into being inside a nation and individual, the influence of national culture, social structure and the social background of different times. In this thesis, through the vertical analysis of greetings in English and Chinese, some regular patterns and characteristics of greeting expressions can be found.
