摘要
With the help of laws and statistical data of the period between 1868 and 1918, the author analyses how education policy of Hungary, in a historical period where the nationality situation became a central political issue, affected and changed those nationality groups that were living in the Hungarian territory in different states of national and civil development. The author's conclusions show that although the governments in power provided more or less opportunities for the non-Hungarian population's education, there was a definite pressure on ethnic minorities to learn the national language. In that effort, primary school teachers played a significant role. The author refers to a wide range of sources to support the results of his research.
