In connection with fish movement in hydropower plants, rack systems are of relevance. The name Otto Kirschmer often appears, as he was the first to present research on their hydraulic losses. However, this aspect is only a fraction of his merits for hydraulic engineering in Germany. In addition to the researcher and manager Kirschmer, the present work also tries to capture the person Kirschmer, so that his name may also be a role model for many in the future.
