Miscibility gap of the Fe-NiAl system relative to the physical properties of alloys. I. Alloys with a high NiAl intermetallic compound content

A determination of the miscibility gap boundary at low temperatures on the NiAl intermetallic compound phase field side of the Fe-NiAl system is presented. A close study of the beta-NiAl phase field is performed using different physical property measurements and the determination of the phases occurring. The changes of micro-hardness, density, magnetization, coercive force and lattice parameter were measured for these alloys. In addition, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis have been performed to characterize the microstructure. This analysis clearly reveals at low temperatures the solubility limit of iron in the intermetallic compound NiAl.
