Restoration of timber roof structures - the use of traditional techniques or employment of contemporary techniques

The act of restoring a work of art to its potential state has been discussed for centuries. Complexity of restoration in terms of intervention methods reveals a series of contextual values that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Many theorists have tried to define a line of thought to be adopted on all types of elements, but there are always exceptions and each case resulted in restoration disputes. Of the wide variety of restoration cases, the timber structure, namely the structure employed in traditional roofing, presents various forms of refurbishment due to the peculiar characteristics of the material. This study seeks to show the use of traditional techniques on timber structures in order to perpetuate architectural traditions of a period, without the need to create false history or doubts regarding original and refurbished items.
