Role of altered gap junctional intercellular communication in lung neoplasia

The role of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) in lung neoplasia is poorly understood. Here we review our studies on tumor promoter modulation of lung epithelial cell GJIC, the effects of D-carotene, dibutyryl cAMP, and dexamethasone on lung epithelial cell GJIC and growth, the frequency of altered GJIC in human and rodent lung carcinoma cells, and the ability of connexin cDNA transfection to restore lung carcinoma GJIC and reduce growth and tumorigenicity.
