A prototype of knowledge-based decision support system for construction cost management

摘要
With a broad literature review, this paper highlighted the need of high level decision support systems for the industry and the possibilities of developing such system that is provided by the current information technologies. It was revealed that a range of cost-control and cost estimating softwares are available in the market. However, these softwares are mainly low-level computer-based systems for data storage/retrieval and cost calculation, high-end softwares with ability of data analysis and managerial decision support are rare. The paper hypothesises that in the future software for cost management in construction should focus on the implementation of expert knowledge, i.e., the ability and expertise to apply the cost rate and other data in cost control, along with construction experience and make correct decisions in the competitive market. The design of a prototype of such decision support system is presented in this paper. This system is web-based and is an integrated suite of tools employing four software sub-products, which link to a comprehensive knowledge database. This knowledge base is the backbone of the system, and is accessible from any level within the system to provide support for better decision-making in cost management.
