In this paper, we analyze the performance of a type of optical add-drop multiplexer based on an asymmetric Bragg grating coupler which has recently been proposed [IEEE Photon. Tech. Lett. 8 (1996) 1656]. The purpose of this analysis is both to provide design insight and to determine the feasibility of making such a device based on ultraviolet-induced phase gratings in an asymmetric fiber or channel-waveguide coupler that meets the demanding specifications of current and next-generation wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) communications systems.
