Two-dimensional phase-field simulations are used to test the well known theories of Kurz and coworkers for free dendritic growth of binary alloys. Good agreement between numerically predicted and theoretical values of the growth Peclet numbers is obtained. Furthermore, within the uncertainty of the numerical predictions, the selection parameter sigma* determined from the phase-field simulations is approximately independent of the initial melt concentration, which is in agreement with the theories.
