Two major 18TH century flood disasters in Norway

Two large flood disasters are compared, one in east Norway and one in west Norway. The meteorological causes for the two events are typical of the largest floods in the two parts Of Norway. Both events are well documented by contemporary damage reports, the flood levels are also known by several flood marks carved into rocks for the 1789- flood and can be inferred by references to a stone church at one site in 1743. Both floods caused extensive damages, which are summarised. The occurrence of such floods can be used to assess climate variability over the last three Centuries.
