Cultural Representation, Identity and Socialization: Exploring Critical Approaches to Providing Arts Education for North Korean Refugee Youth

Y This article explores how arts participatory programs can enable North Korean refugee youth to search for and expand their identity (or identities) through arts education. Before discussing arts participatory approaches, the author investigates current practices in arts education offered to North Korean refugee youth in South Korea. From a critical studies perspective, she develops discussions ranging from understanding demographic features, cultural representation and the legal status of North Korean refugee youth, to the benefits of arts education, to the identity-formation process among these youth. The article suggests future directions in arts education programming for NK refugee youth using a participatory action research (PAR) approach.
