摘要
Transport Telematics as part of an intelligent transport system, can help optimise existing transport infrastructure capacities, link networks, improve safety and reduce the negative effects of road transport on the environment. If can also provide logistical support for transport operations and improve the efficiency of collective transport operations. The growing Information Society will also benefit transport users by providing a range of "added value" services. And at the same time, market opportunities for industry and service providers will be created. Since 1988 the European Commission launched several R&D programmes to develop transport telematics in Europe. In 1997 it also issued a Communication on a general strategy and framework for the deployment of telematics in the road transport sector. An overview is given of the main achievements in the R&D programmes as well as the actions proposed to accelerate the deployment of road transport telematics in Europe.
