ExperD, THE 'SWISS' ARMY KNIFE' FOR LABORATORY EDUCATION

In higher education, higher order cognitive skills, like designing experiments, are important learning outcomes in natural science and engineering curricula. The open source e-learning tool ExperD supports students in learning how to design experiments and processes. Because ExperD runs in the web browser, the tool is easily deployable in both campus-based and distance education. In this paper we describe various scenarios for using ExperD: "worked examples", "fill the gaps", "teacher led design discussions", "guided inquiry design", and "open-ended inquiry design". We will show how these scenarios fit within instructional design models, such as the Four Component instructional design model, the Cognitive Model of Multimedia learning and the ARCS model of motivational design. Hence, we position ExperD as a multitool for modern education.
