The maturity of wireless technologies on the one hand, and the evolution of applications on the other hand, justify the introduction of Quality of Service (QoS) in ad-hoc networks. Much research has been done to date on QoS in ad-hoc networks. In this paper, we present our view of QoS architecture and define its different components. Among these components we will emphasize on QoS model which defines the achieved QoS and the needed mechanisms. Four models are comparatively evaluated. A brief state-of-the-art for QoS signaling, QoS routing and QoS MAC is given. We characterize QoS demanding applications through seven criteria and show how these criteria influence the choice of QoS architecture. These choices are illustrated by some QoS demanding applications.
