Cross-layer optimization for multimedia application over wireless networks

The conventional layered design approach for wireless networks can't be fit for the future wireless communication systems due to the time-varying and fading natural of the wireless channel and the users' dynamic QoS(Quality of service) requirments We propose a cross-layer optimization considering the fairness among users to solve the above problems from the aspect of application layer. Our approach is based on joint optimization of the application layer, the data link layer and the physical layer through extracting the layer-specific parameters in the wireless multi-user scenario. Our optimization can maximize the users's video quality and use the wireless resource effectively while maintaining the fairness among users. The simulation results show that the proposed criterion of optimization can lead to better system performance while maintaining fairness among users.
