Two approaches to predict the average or representative heat-transfer coefficient for a long, horizontal fin cooled by convection and radiation were described. The methods are called integration method and the heat-balance method, which makes use of numerically determined temperature distribution that relies on a natural convection correlation and simple radiation model to account for the heat loss. The integration method underpredicts the value of heat transfer coefficients as compared with results from measurements due to higher value that occurs near the base. The heat balance method is in very good agreement with the measured values.
