Just Different!: Radio Deejays and Mandarin Radio in Singapore

Much of the historiography on Singapore radio and popular music in the past several decades portrays a radio system that is heavily dependant on foreign content and popular radio deejays who are known to able to imitate the style of deejays of other nationalities instead of presenting the Singaporean within themselves. This article challenges this rendition and examines the phenomenon of the radio deejays at UFM 1003, one of Singapore's Mandarin-based radio stations, that with the freedom of expression through multiple outlets besides the radio, these individuals have been able to put together an alternative identity that is vastly different from the stereotypical Singaporean radio deejay.
