Optical technologies for the information superhighway

The Information Superhighway is a vague concept which covers a wider range of topics. These include software and hardware related issues, such as : object orientation, service creation, network management and design, internetworking, optical technology, Si microelectronics, etc. In this paper we will address the optical technologies which play a major role in the development of the Information Superhighway. Although issues related to optical recording and displays will be briefly discussed, major emphasis will be put on optical communication technologies.
