Properties and Forces of Immersed Friction Stir Welded AA6061-T6

摘要
This paper explores the characteristic properties and forces of immersed friction stir welds in AA6061-T6 in order to determine the feasibility of underwater repair and/or construction using this relatively new welding technique. An experimental matrix was preformed using constant tool and sample materials for conventional friction stir welds as well as submerged welds. The results of the submerged welds were compared to conventional welds and include comparison of forces, torques, welding temperatures, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at optimal welding conditions. The results compared were for AA6061-T6 welded at rotational and travel speeds of 1000-2000 rpm and 5-14 ipm (2.12-5.93 mm/s).
