Service availability in distributed network architectures: Evaluation and planning issues

摘要：
A novel definition for service availability in a distributed system is provided. It is used to evaluate the benefits of a distributed architecture for a radio access network in mobile communications. In a case study, it is shown that a distributed solution is able to improve service availability significantly and to avoid large-scale outages. A heuristic approach for planning the distributed radio access network with the goal to compare its transport costs to those of traditional centralised architectures is introduced. It is used to derive the additionally required transport capacity and the according cost of equipment.
