PRODUCTIVITY, AS MEASURE OF NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS. ROMANIA'S STATUS IN THE EU27

This paper is looking into the evolution of the productivity in EU27, as well as the evolution of the gross annual earnings for a period of nine years, between 2000 and 2008. We analyze Romanian economy's status in that respect, as well as the gap still to be filled between "old" and "new" members. We then calculate the correlation between productivity relative to the EU27 average and the earning relative to the same average, for a period of three year, using the ratio between the two indicators and the Pearson correlation. We find that there is a strong correlation between the two terms, indicating that the earnings and productivity are generally related, in a good or poor correlation in terms of effects over national competitiveness.
