The measurement of the abutment as a baseline for peri-implant probing

Probing is a very important diagnostic tool for detecting periodontal and peri-implant lesions. Disease progression can be assessed over time. The differences in probing depth around teeth and implants are due to biologic considerations. The histologic dimension is different from the clinical probing depth, and the depth of penetration depends on the tissue condition. These factors should be taken into consideration when the treatment decision is made. To record the physiologic baseline, a measurement of the abutment is done before insertion. This is important due to the lack of a general probing depth around implants.
