Hyponatremia: Diagnosis, treatment and prevention - A review of the literature

Hyponatremia is an electrolyte imbalance in which the relative concentration of sodium is depressed. The condition is strongly linked to overhydration with hypotonic solutions as opposed to a strict lack of adequate sodium stores, although multiple predisposing factors may increase the likelihood of symptomatic consequences. The diagnosis can be strongly suggested on a clinical basis, although confirmation is possible through labwork. The chiropractic physician's ability to diagnose this malady may prove life-saving; prevention through athlete education may do the same. The chiropractor will further increase his abilities by learning to identify athletes who are highly likely to be suffering from symptomatic hyponatremia and directing them for suitable treatment.
