The paper presents date on various microbes and, in particular, infectious agents in equine semen. Stallion semen may contain many different species of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. The majority of them are generally considered to be nonpathogenic, some of them, however, may also be opportunistic or potentially pathogenic microorganisms (beta-hemolityc streptococci, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and true veneral (Taylorella equigenitalis, EAV, Trypanosoma equiperdum). The paper also describes the influence of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidernicus on stallion semen quality after infection in vivo and in vitro.
