Instability of solid-liquid interfaces in TiC-Ni cermets

摘要
When WC or ZrC is added separately to TiC-Ni cermets, the shape of TiC particles becomes very irregular, with the formation of concave interfaces. This phenomenon, which is referred to as instability of the solid-liquid interface (ISLI), does not occur when WC and ZrC are added simultaneously. The results are in agreement with the prediction that the lattice mismatch between the mixed-carbide and the initial TiC and resultant strain energies are the major cause of ISLI.
