Effect of a buffer layer on the perpendicular anisotropy for Co-Pt alloy thin films

摘要
Multilayer thin films were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature and were not heat treated. Buffer layers, viz. single buffer layers such as Ru, Cu, Ag and double buffer layers such as Ru/Cu, Ru/Ag and Ru/NiFe, were used to enhance the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co-Pt. The multilayer thin films using a single buffer layer of Ru and a double buffer layer of Ru/NiFe exhibited high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a very high coercivity and squareness of up to > 3000 Oe and 0.99, respectively. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis, the closest interatomic distance of Ru was almost equal to that of Co-Pt with a composition of Co-30.7 at.% Pt and the misfit was 1.1 %. The Ru/NiFe double buffer layer having a very low misfit with the Co-Pt layer exhibited an enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
