摘要
Cenosphere fly ash particles are very light materials with density in the range 0.4 - 0.6 g/cm(3). Loosely packed beds of cenosphere fly ash (above 55 vol% in the composite) were successfully infiltrated by molten aluminum under pressure in the range of 0.3-0.7 MPa. The density of infiltrated aluminum - fly ash composite (1.4 g/cm(3)) is roughly half of the density of aluminum (2.68 g/cm(3)) making it a very attractive low density low cost material for automotive applications. The density, hardness, and compressive strength were found to vary along the length of the composite with the position in the composite. The portion with high density (bottom part) exhibits higher hardness and compressive strength.
