摘要
Edmonton Alberta opened the first portion of its South LRT extension in January 2006, the Health Sciences Station. The station provides access to the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, the University of Alberta Hospital, the Cross Cancer Institute, and Canadian Blood Services. The extension to the Health Sciences Station required tunnels under St. Joseph's College and the University of Alberta's Education Car Park. The brakes on the LRT vehicles were upgraded to accommodate the 6 percent grade leaving the tunnels. These new vehicles will supplement the 37 U2 Siemens Deuwag vehicles currently in service in Edmonton. The new vehicles will be assembled at the Siemens plant in Sacramento, California. The extension from Port Imperial Station to Tonnelle Avenue is the first only part of the HBLRTS that operates underground. When it was completed in 1883, the Weehawken Tunnel afforded direct rail access through the New Jersey Palisades on the west shore of the Hudson River to New York Harbor.
