Seizures in cerebral venous thrombosis

Seizures are common in cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). Few articles focused on in this problem. In our series of CVT half of patients (12/24) presented seizures. We analyse these cases in relation to etiology and site of occlusion, neurological features, type of seizures, outcome. Predisposing factors were the involvement of cortical veins and the presence of cerebral ischemic infarct or hemorrhage. Focal or partial seizures in 2 cases, generalized in 9 and status epilepticus in 1; all in the acute stage. Every case with single seizure. Antiepileptic drugs were gradually withdrawn one year after the CVT. No residual or recurrent epilepsy. From the literature little is known on the risk of residual epilepsy. We think that there is a modest risk, drugs prevention could be limited to early seizures and long-term treatment is not necessary.
