Actual tendencies of fruit culture in Romania

The "National Plan for Rural Development 2014-2020" has focused substantial funds for a project dedicated to fruit industry, called "Investments in fruit production". From the whole 25 fruit species which are suitable to be grown in Romania (3 pomes, 5 stones, 4 nuts and 13 berries) and taking into account environmental changes, mainly during the last 30 years, new trends have occurred based on the integration of genetics and the training system. Species as blueberry, walnut, hazelnut, sweet cherry have become important, their surface being in progress with more than 6,000 ha of orchard establishment from the total of 10,000 ha. Improving fruit quality, yield and crops efficiency, modern cultivars and semi-dwarfing and dwarfing rootstocks (which allow high density orchards), beside new techniques of training system which include central leader system as canopy shape, automated fertigation control, new pest and diseases, represent the tendencies of fruit growing in Romania.
