Primary anorectal malignant melanoma. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A 50-year old man developed a nonpigmented malignant melanoma in the anorectal area. The diagnosis was established by a biopsy. The histologic diagnosis of this highly malignant tumor can be difficult in nonpigmented forms, and can benefit from the use of PS 100 and HMB 45 as immunological markers. Although surgery is the mainstay of management, the best method is not agreed on, and the prognosis seems more closely dependent on the stage ct the disease than on the type ct surgical procedure performed. The role of radiation therapy and chemotherapy needs to he evaluated.
