Evaluating rehabilitation technology with the analytic hierarchy process

摘要
The aim of this study is to evaluate functional electro stimulation as a means to restore the hand function of tetraplegic. In this evaluation, a rehabilitation treatment team compared the performance of the new technology with the performance of conventional surgery. The analytic hierarchy process, a technique for multi-criteria decision analysis, provided quantitative support to the comparisons. Performance was derived from functional improvement, treatment load, risks, user friendliness and social outcomes. The results show the relative strengths and weaknesses of the new rehabilitation treatment. They underline the need for evaluations of new medical technology to be more comprehensive than the evaluation of the functional improvement of the patient.
