摘要：
A new mobile system for worldwide use is now being developed to enhance and supersede current systems. Often referred to as the Third Generation Mobile System, it will be an enhanced universal digital personal communication system and will allow for wireless Internet access, videoconferencing, and other widebandwidth applications. In Europe, the system being developed in the framework of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute is called UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).
