摘要：
This paper deals with three main topics: (2) the role of ''Sustainable Development'' from an engineer's point of view; (2) how this concept will affect the future uses of underground space; and (3) what can be done to promote a sustainable future. The author describes trends that will affect future world development, especially urban development; and discusses ways of meeting the challenges posed by an increasing urban population and shrinking world resources.
