Fabrication of Plate-Like Apatite Bioceramic at Low Temperature

摘要
Plate-like carbonate apatite was prepared from calcium carbonate soaking in a phosphate buffer solution at 37 degrees C. The morphology, microstructure, and thermal stability of samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The results show that after soaking in the phosphate buffer solution, calcium ions are dissolved from calcium carbonate particles, and a layer of plate-like apatite with low crystallinity is precipitated on the surface. The conversion percentage of apatite increases with increasing the soaking time, while the conversion rate decreases. The presence of apatite reduces the thermal stability of calcium carbonate, resulting in the transference of endothermic peak from 810 degrees C to 755 degrees C in DSC profile. The obtained carbonate apatite could be used as a biomaterial for artificial bone substitution or bone cavity filling.
