Design of a continuous-time Gm-C bandpass delta-sigma modulator

A second-order continuous-time bandpass DeltaSigma modulator using HEMTs (High-Electron-Mobility Transistors) is designed and its performance characteristics such as SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) are evaluated by SPICE simulation. For high-speed operation of the modulator, the bandpass DeltaSigma scheme, which can reduce the quantization noise at high-frequency regions, and the continuous-time scheme using a continuous-time filter as a loop filter are employed. First, the bandpass filter, quantizer, and D-A converter are designed. Next, the modulator formed by combination of these is simulated. Excellent performance is obtained with an SNR = 44 dB (corresponding to a resolution of 7.0 bits) with a bandwidth of 32 MHz and with SNR = 52 dB (8.3 bits) at 8 MHz. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
